FEBRUARY 2008

Saturday, February 2
“INCOGNITO: A Solo Performance”
featuring Michael S. Fosberg
Presented by Scarritt-Bennett Center and University School of Nashville
7:30 – 9:00 PM @ Scarritt-Bennett Center
Laskey Great Hall

Imagine discovering you are not the person you thought you were. That you have a family, a history, an ethnicity you never knew. How would this discovery impact your life, the lives of those around you; your vision of yourself and society?

Through investigation and a quirk of fate, Michael Fosberg discovers that his father is black…a fact that was somehow lost as he was raised by his mother and adopted father and also hidden since he didn’t "look black.”

This dramatic performance, based on the true events challenges the audience to examine their own preconceptions of how we each define race, and gives us a better understanding of the importance of embracing and celebrating all of who we are.

"Fosberg's justly acclaimed show is one of those rare solo pieces that manages to combine a
sense of personal revelation with a palpable universal appeal. As in the best of such pieces, Fosberg is enough of an eccentric personality to command the stage for a two-hour show about his own life, yet he's also an everyman figure able to spark empathy as he negotiates a life full of extraordinary people and events."

Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune

Tickets: $12 Adult and $7 student (Purchase at the door)

Free & open to the public

Half Tutsi and half Hutu, Brigitte Kitenge fled genocide in Rwanda and torture in Congo. When the genocide began, most of Brigitte's extended family was massacred. Her daughters had to be told that their mother was dead so that they could not inadvertently reveal her whereabouts as she hid from the roving death squads. Listen as she recounts terrifying memories, documented in her book, “Through it All”. This account inspires audiences as she tells of the many personal adversities that she has overcome, and despite her tragedies, remains focused on helping other women rebuild their lives.

MARCH 2008

March 7
“Racism, White Denial, and the Pathology of Privilege”
Featuring Anti-Racist Author and Educator, Tim Wise
7 - 8:30 PM
Laskey Great Hall
Free & open to the public

“As a white man, born and reared in a society that has always bestowed upon me advantages that it has just as deliberately withheld from people of color, I am not expected to think the way I do. I am not supposed to speak against and agitate in opposition to racism and institutionalized white supremacy... After all, to be privileged, to be advantaged, is a coveted position in society, so why, would I seek to change a set of social conditions that work to my benefit?”
- excerpts from “White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son”

From his experiences as a white anti-racist author, educator and white American, Tim Wise has crafted the first history of what it means to be part of the “majority” in America. He has been called one of the most brilliant, articulate, and courageous critics of white privilege in the nation. His relentless search for the truth makes him a critical ally in the fight against racism and he has become one of the most sought-after speakers and educators in the country. He has spoken in 48 states and at 400 college campuses including Harvard and Yale Law School. He has educated physicians, corporations, teachers, law officials, and many others on how to dismantle racism in their institutions and in their lives.

APRIL 2008

April 4-5 (Friday and Saturday) 9 AM – 5 PM
StirFry Seminars @ Scarritt-Bennett Center

“UNLEARNING RACISM ”
Featuring nationally acclaimed lecturer and trainer Lee Mun Wah, director of “The Color of Fear” and “Last Chance for Eden” and Rainbow Markell

So often we are afraid to begin a conversation on racism because we have had a bad experience or feel we will say something wrong or hurtful. This seminar is particularly exciting and satisfying, because it allows everyone to practice talking to someone who is different from them in a compassionate and honest way. Participants will learn that they are not alone in their fears and that all of us lack a “model” of how begin this type of conversation. The most important ingredient is our sincerity and our willingness to learn and understand each other.

We will practice sharing with each other through films, small group interactions, role plays, and personal stories.

Participants will learn:
· To notice the impact and intent of our communications on other cultures
· Ways to respond compassionately and openly about diversity issues
· How to listen mindfully and with awareness
· How personal stories can affect our perceptions and attitudes
· Ways to create a sense of community through dialogue and stories
· How to work with conflict and hurt when diversity issues are involved

About Lee Mun Wah:
A nationally acclaimed lecturer and Master Diversity & Communications Trainer, Lee Mun Wah is a Chinese American community therapist, documentary filmmaker, Special Education educator, performing poet, Asian folkteller and author. He is also Director of StirFry Seminars & Consulting, which works with corporations, government agencies, educational institutions, and social agencies to facilitate diversity issues through healthy and authentic cross cultural relationships.
