At our last (inaugural) meeting we introduced the book, talked about procedures, and did some sharing of our own cross-cultural experiences.
At our next meeting we will do some in-depth discussion about The Help. Here are a few reflection guidelines as you read or reread the book.
1. How were the characters in the book shaped by their culture and the society in which they lived and worked?
2. What influence did religion/faith have on any of the characters?
3. What was Aibileen trying to do with the secret stories she told Mae Mobley?
4. How do you deal with the irony of the toilets and raising/caring for the children?
5. What societal boundaries were crossed by the characters?
What are the boundaries of race or class that are part of the Nashville community today and how are we dealing with them?
6. What experiences of your own came to mind as you read The Help?
7. Who are the domestics in homes in Nashville today? How are they treated? What about wage scale, duties/responsibilities, benefits, relationships within the home between domestic and employer?
8. Where do cleaning services fit into domestic work today?
The book for August and September will be Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford. It is our plan to discuss the book in August and have an educational or personal presentation in September about the topic.
Good reading and reflection! Keep cool!
