Photographer/artist Dee Davis, art director/floral designer/photographer Rita J.Maggart and graphic designer, Carla Lankford have collaborated on the exhibit “Women and Flowers” to develop an important commentary on the multi-cultural impact of the time honored tradition of beautiful women and beautiful flowers. Rita J. Maggart says, “ Each photograph, like each woman has its own story. The “Women and Flowers” collection of photography is not about one woman or one flower but about how the two become one.”

The artists sought each other out in 2000 to share ideas and ignite each other’s creativity. Seventeen years later they are together again to bring you, a new and revised version of the original exhibit. “As artists we are always searching to create art that stands the test of time, delivers a message, and evokes an emotional response. We hope we have accomplished this creative goal by photographing women and flowers in their natural settings and documenting the way they interact with each other. Each portrait shows how the beauty of one enhances the beauty of the other,” says Maggart.

Rita J. Maggart is an artist and photographer in Nashville, TN.  Rita says, “Always, always I must communicate and create.” This is the mission statement for her art, photography and writing. With a background in oil painting and floral design, Rita photographs floral images as portraiture. Her artistry with flowers is shown in the floral designs for the “Women and Flowers” exhibit and as the art director for the exhibit. Rita began in 2005 studying at Nashville State Community College in Photography and Visual Communications. She continues to study with private art instructors to develop her skills in photography and oil painting. Rita conducts workshops and gives presentations on the beauty of botanical art. She exhibits her fine art photography in the Southeast and is represented in several private collections.

Dee Davis Photographer Women and Flowers : I am a Realtor with Village Real Estate Services in Nashville Tn despite having graduated from the University of the South in 1989 with a BA in fine arts concentrating in photography, then attending the Portfolio Center in Atlanta Ga. to study commercial arts. I had a book of my photographs published in 1994 and was a freelance commercial photographer until 2001. Now, besides selling houses all over middle Tennessee,  I take photos for my friends’ weddings and portraits of their kids. I have also designed a purse that is about to go into production, I am a competitive ballroom and West Coast Swing dancer, and a masters swimmer.

Carla Lankford was a graphic designer in 2000 toiling away on boring ad campaigns when her friends Dee Davis and Rita Maggart asked if she’d help them put together an exhibit of photos of women with flowers that each told a significant story about the subject and her connection to flowers. Hours and hours of creativity and laughter followed. After stepping away from full time design work to focus on parenting and painting for the last several years, she was thrilled to dust off her graphic designer hat and revisit these beautiful photographs.
